Well, here we are in week 2. I must say, going into week 2 wasn't as easy as week 1 was. The first day went really great. Then the apathy set in. I had some difficulty staying focused on my eating. Not really a lot, but my real trouble was finding the motivation to stick to the running. My muscles hurt, my knees hurt, my ankles hurt, my feet hurt, my back hurt. I didn't want to get up early. The list goes on and on. What finally changed my mind and got me back on track with it is a quote that I heard that basically said that I shouldn't bother worrying about everything that I have to get through tomorrow, or the next day, or the rest of this week. The only thing I need to worry about is what I need to get done TODAY. Yeah, of course running 13 miles this week to lead up to my 6 mile run on Sunday is daunting. But if I really think about it, I only need to think about running 2 miles on Monday and not worry about running 3 more miles until Tuesday gets here. That way, it's not so overwhelming. And if I can keep that mentality going in the weeks ahead, the running will take care of itself.
I think that the reason I've been experiencing pain this week (beyond regular muscle soreness) is that my shoes have finally broken down and need to be replaced. The pain started happening pretty much all at once. I don't think the issue is with my weight, because I've lost weight since I start all this running back in June. So I'm going to replace my shoes next week and see what happens. When I first bought this pair, all of the pain that I had as a result of running just magically disappeared and stayed away, so I'm hoping that will be the case again.
Yesterday, I bought a watch that will keep track of my timing intervals while I'm running longer short distances like the 3 mile runs I'm doing this week. I went into Dick's Sporting Goods (there's one near work) and let a guy talk me into buying a good one for $70. The minute I left the store, I knew it was a bad idea. It's a Timex Ironman Sleek series, and a very good watch, but I absolutely cannot justify spending that much money on a watch that I'm only going to wear when running simply because I need it to beep after every minute. Target has the exact same watch (only one model lower) for $40. Worst case, I buy it there for nearly half the cost. Plus, they have color options! The one I currently have is black. But I think what I'm going to do is order it from ebay. Right now there's one up for auction for $7. SEVEN DOLLARS!! That's a steal!! And there is another ebay store that is just selling them for $25 with free shipping. Plus, both of those watches are pink :-) So I think I'll just hold out and go with one of those pink ones. Or if I find that I absolutely have to have it right away, I can go to Target. Either way, I'm definitely taking the black one back today. Telling Charlie what had happened with the watch is kind of a funny story.
Me: Hey, I'm at Target and I need your opinion. Would you buy this $40 watch that beeps by itself after every minute or this $30 one that will count down one minute but you have to push a button after every interval to reset the timer?
Charlie: *long pause* Isn't $40 kind of a lot for a timer? We have a $3 kitchen timer on the fridge that will do that....
Me: I have to wear it on my wrist because I'm already holding my ipod and water bottle.
Charlie: Why don't you come home and look online? I'm sure you can find it for less than retail if you shop around.
Me: Great idea. I'm going to be a few minutes late getting home from work. I have to stop at Dick's and take back the watch I was talked into getting there. It was $70 and these watches at Target are cheaper.
Charlie: *really long pause* Um, yeah. Take that back to the store. You're crazy.
