So day 1 of boot camp/carb detox went pretty well. I got up this morning with no idea what to eat today, since I went to bed pretty much right after publishing my last post. But after a trip to the grocery store to stock up on some low-carb staples, I was able to come up with a decent meal plan for today. Here's how it went...
Breakfast: A chocolate protein shake (with water, ice, and a scoop of instant coffee so it was more like a iced chocolate mocha... regular milk just has too many carbs.)
Lunch: A concoction that I like to refer to as the egg-burger - 3 ounces of lean ground beef, 1 egg, and 3 egg whites scrambled together with a little cheese on top. Charlie ate his with lots of hot sauce :-)
Snack: 6 slices of roast beef lunch meat with a little cheese inside.
Dinner: 4 ounces of chicken, cooked with salt, pepper, and paprika, 1 cup of steamed broccoli tossed in a little butter, and a spinach salad with oil and vinegar dressing and a little parm on top.
It really hasn't been so bad. I was worried about going through carb withdrawals or something, but so far everything has been okay. Just a slight headache, but I think that has more to do with the fact that I'm having some sinus issues than anything else. I have felt slightly hungry all day because I don't have a bunch of extra carbs filling me up and I'm having to watch out for portion control. But to combat that, I've been trying to drink my water quota for the day (almost there!) and staying busy helps. Although I probably will have another protein shake before I go to bed because it is only 7:00 and I just ate a good size dinner but my tummy still feels a little rumbly. Charlie has told me that he will try hard to stick to the plan, although I think he's a little disillusioned by the list of things that we can't eat this week. He can't use onions when we cook... he could use mushrooms but I forgot to get them at the store today (oops). The fact that the hot sauce he likes has zero carbs in it helps out because he can put it on everything that he thinks is lacking flavor. I really hope that this plan is something he can stick to for this week.... next week will be better because although we still have to watch portion control, there are no forbidden foods. And by then, maybe we'll both be really motivated because we should start seeing some results.
Overall, a good very-low-carb day :-)
